ABSTRACT
The people worldwide are adopting herbal medicines as alternative health care system. Their reliance on herbal medicines has led to remarkable growth of traditional systems of medicine. The preparation of herbal formulation is usually based on traditional methods in accordance with the procedures described in classical literature which sometimes lacks scientific validation. It is utmost important to standardize the method of preparation and phytochemical parameters to ensure their authenticity and therapeutic effects. Therefore, a poly-herbal Unani formulation Majoon-e-Lana, widely used as nervine tonic, has been standardized through various quality control parameters. The formulation was assessed by carrying out
conventional analysis such as organoleptic evaluation (colour, odour, taste and consistency), microscopy, physicochemical evaluation (moisture content, total ash, acid insoluble ash, pH values, water & ethanol soluble extracts, sugar content) along with the HPTLC fingerprinting. The determination of harmful contaminants such as heavy metals, microbial load, aflatoxins and pesticide residue was also carried out in order to establish the quality of formulation.
Keywords: Physicochemical analysis, Microscopy, Pesticide residue, Aflatoxins, Heavy metals.
