Punam V. Lodwal*, Ashwini Bhivsane and Dr. Gajanan S. Sanap
ABSTRACT
Oral administration is a popular and convenient way of administering medication. Despite its advantages, however, it also brings challenges. Many drugs are unsuitable for oral administration for the following reasons: first-pass metabolism; less than ideal qualities; and side effects of treatment. In addition, oral administration is highly dependent on patient compliance. Implantable drug delivery devices are an alternative system that can provide effective drug delivery at lower concentrations, thereby minimizing side effects and increasing patient compliance. This article provides an overview of the classification of these drug delivery devices; drug delivery mechanism; materials used in production; different production methods; and examples of clinical applications of implantable drug delivery devices.
Keywords: Implantation, novel drug delivery system, Biodegradable, Non-Biodegradable Implants, Method.
