A REVIEW ON CHEMICAL PROFILE, TRADITIONAL USES AND PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF ERYNGIUM FOETIDUM L.: A FLAVOURED CULINARY HERB

ABSTRACT
Eryngium foetidum L. (Apiaceae), is a biennial herb commonly known as Mexican coriander and Culantro, and it is used as culinary herb which is substituted for coriander sativum as a spice in food across different countries. Due to its high aroma traditionally used for respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal disorders and skin diseases for its medicinal properties. Based on the ethnomedical evidence many studies have been conducted to identify phytoconstituents and related pharmacological effects of this plant. This study reviewed the current state of findings related to pharmacological activities of Eryngium foetidum. Pharmacological screening shows different activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic,
antimalarial, larvicidal, hepatoprotective and anthelmintic activities. The goal of this review is to provide a concise account of its traditional use, chemical profile and potential pharmacological activities.
