ABSTRACT

Background: Ficus sagittate Vahl (F. sagittata) is a valuable medicinal plant widely used in conventional medicine. Ethanol was used as a solvent to prepare the leaf extract of F. sagittata (EEFL). Results:The phytochemical screening of EEFL revealed higher phenolic (49.65 mg/gm of gallic acid equivalent) and flavonoid contents (146.02 mg/gm of catechin equivalent) in the dry extract. EEFL also showed notable scavenging activity in all assays (IC50 value ≥ 59.175 μg/mL). In the α-amylase inhibition assay, at a concentration of 500 μg/mL of EEFL, there was a 54.71% inhibition of α-amylase activity. Moreover, 43.70% inhibition of α-glucosidase activity was observed at 10 μg/mL of EEFL. In diabetic mice, the extract showed a restorative effect on body weight and serum biomarkers such as glucose, SGOT, SGPT, creatinine, total protein, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglyceride, urea, and uric acid. Conclusions: Finally, this study conclude that F. sagittata leaf extract possesses antioxidant and antidiabetic activities.
