ABSTRACT
Public knowledge about antibiotics these days is considered extremely low due to the lack of awareness and wrong practices regarding the use of antibiotics. Education about the use of antibiotics is very important in daily life because most people often use antibiotics without enough understanding. In the process of making this review article, the writer used a literature study method by collecting data and sources from 2017 to 2022. The entire published literature on public knowledge and attitudes about the use and resistance of antibiotics was collected from Springer, Science Direct, and PubMed databases with keywords knowledge, attitude, the use of antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance. This study showed that the knowledge and attitudes of people in various countries about the use and resistance of antibiotics are low. This finding is not surprising because education about the use and resistance of antibiotics is still scarce in society. This study was in accordance with what has been reported by other similar studies. This study found that the level of public knowledge and attitudes about the use and resistance of antibiotics is low due to the lack of education specifically about antibiotics. The results of the literature review showed that public knowledge and attitudes about the use and resistance of antibiotics are quite low, except among medical students and medical workers. Different from other countries, there are several factors that influence public knowledge and attitudes, such as education, economic status, place of residence, information obtained, and social status. Therefore, these factors must be empowered to reduce the occurrence of irrational use of antibiotics in society.
Keywords: Knowledge, attitude, antibiotics, resistance.
