ABSTRACT
Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airways, leading to significant morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Aim of study: To evaluate the severity of the COPD and distinguish of different phenotypes of the COPD by using HRCT. Patients & Methods: A prospective study conducted in computerized tomography unit of Radiology Department at Imamein Alkadhmeim Medical City through the period from 1st of September, 2017 to 1st August 2018 on
sample of 40 patients with COPD. After taking full history and examination, the researcher conducted the HRCT scan for chest. Results: The severity of the COPD was detected by HRCT. It was found that 19 of the studded patients (47.5% ) had moderate type of COPD and 16 of the studded patients (40%) had mild type of COPD, and 5 of the studded patients (12.5% ) had sever type. Smoking duration and smoking amount and increase age had highly significant effect on the severity. Conclusions: The computerized tomography scan is a valuable tool for diagnosis and assessment of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. The computerized tomography scan depending on phenotypes like bronchiectasis, airways dilation, air trapping and others is highly predicting severity staging of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Risk factors exacerbating severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases are elderly age, retirement, long smoking duration, high smoking amount and long disease duration.
