Abstract

A PROSPECTIVE STUDY ON PREVALENCE OF POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME AMONG WOMEN OF AGE GROUP OF 12-30 IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT

Objective  To determine the prevalence of clinical Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).  Identify risk factors of an d conditions related to PCOS. Methods: A total of 107 subjects were enrolled of age group 12-50 years with or without the symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome such as oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea, hirsutism, acne, Acanthosis nigricans, chronic pelvic pain. All the subjects were provided questionnaires to fill and then analyse based on the symptoms and diagnosis if available. Based on the answers filled by the subjects in the questionnaires, different patterns of symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome was checked. Additionally, various other parameters such as age, obesity, pre-menstru al symptoms and medications taken were also noted. Results: According to our study, it was found that out of 107 subjects, 77 subjects were diagnosed with PCOS, which accounts for 72%, whereas 50 subjects were not diagnosed with PCOS, which accounted for 28%. Hence the Prevalence of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome was 72% amon g women of age group 12-30 in a tertiary care hospital. Conclusions: The study provided evidence of impaired lifestyle habits such as eating oily junk foods, consuming more carbohydrates, disturbed sleep cycle, no exercise, mental and emotional disturbances, posin g an increased risk of prevalence of PCOS in women.
