Abstract

PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIONS OF SYZYGIUM CUMINI PLANT

ABSTRACT

This review highlights the phytochemical constituents and pharmacological action of Syzygium cumini (Myrtaceae). This are commonly known as jamun or black plum is indigenous to india. The plant has traditionally been used for its rich nutrition and medicinal value. which has been credited with several medicinal properties in the traditional system of medicine, the Ayurveda. The different properties attributed to Jamun are sweet, sour, astringent, acrid, refrigerant, carminative, diuretic, and digestive. Apart from this it has also shown its favourable potential as anti-allergic, antibacterial, anticancer, anti-clastogenic, anti-diarrhoeal, anti-fertility, anti- fungal, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, anti-lieshmanial, anti-nociceptive, anti-oxidant, anti-viral, ascaricidal, cardio protective, chemo protective, diuretic, gastro protective, hepato protective, hypothermic, neuro psycho pharmacoiogical and radio protective agent. Preliminary phytochemical studies revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids, phenols, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides and tannins as the chemical class there in the extract. This medicinal plant is employed for the treatment of various affilictions. The plant restrains glycoside, ellagicacid, isoquercetin, kaempferol, anthocynins, myricetin, primary active constituent. Dissimilar parts of this plant especially fruit, seed, stem, bark, leafs. Each part have number of medicinal uses and treatment of ulcers, pylouria, diarrhoea, dysentery, liver disorders, female sterility, piles etc.
