BRYOPHYLLUM PINNATUM- A MEDICINAL HERB

ABSTRACT
The name Bryophyllum pinnatum is derived from Greek- Bryo means to sprout and phyllon is a leaf. It is indigenous to Iran and neighbouring countries. Now, it is grown is almost every part of the world. This review article gives the information about chemical constituents, geographical aspect and pharmacological properties of Bryophyllum Pinnatum. It is a medical plant which is used to treat various diseases like ulcers, diabetics, viral Disease and many more. Studies suggested that B. pinnatum has become new drug option for
treatment of malarial. It has also shown antibacterial properties. The plant contains alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin, phenolic compound, saponins. It is a fleshy herb which grows up to 120cm and it belongs to ceassulaceae family. The botanical name of this plant is Bryophyllum pinnatum (Lam.) Oken. It is commonly known as air plant, miracle leaf or life plant. To sum up, the existing data favours the use of B. pinnatum for the mentioned diseases, but additional research is required to fully understand the mechanisms of action and identify the pharmacologically active constituents.
