ABSTRACT
Studies have emphasized that the consumption of exotic fruits positively interferes in the control of modifiable risk factors, especially in plasma lipid levels, which would result in a lower incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases in the population. In this context, the effects of the consumption of yellow mangosteen [Garcinia cochinchinensis (Lour.) Choisy] juices on the lipid profile and atherogenic indexes in experimental models were evaluated. Forty rats fed ad libitum and divided into groups G1 (control), that received only water, G2 and G3, treated with pulp juice (20; 40 % v/v), and G4 and G5, treated with leaf juice (20; 40 % v/v), over the 40-day period. Biochemical analyzes were performed to determine glucose, liver enzymes aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase, total cholesterol (TC), LDL-c, HDL-c, triglycerides and high-sensitive C-
reactive protein (hs-CRP). Lipid variables were used to calculate atherogenic indexes. Animals treated with juices from mangosteen leaves (20 and 40 %) showed significantly lower values of plasma triglycerides, and the TG/HDL-c ratio, considered an atherogenic index, decreased significantly in the group treated with 40 % leaves. Juice with 40 % pulp significantly reduced the plasma levels of hs-CRP, an inflammatory marker related to metabolic disorders. There were no significant variations in the other biochemical parameters evaluated. The results show that consumption of the yellow mangosteen plant as juice can be an adjunct in the prevention of atherosclerotic disorders and other chronic-degenerative diseases by population, as well as used as a reference in future works with this exotic plant.
