Prathiksha* and Karunakar Hedge

ABSTRACT

Urolithiasis commonly called Kidney stones are small, hard deposits of minerals or other compounds found in urine. Kidney stones vary in size, shape, color and the causes include lifestyle habits or certain dietary elements or medications which tend to increase the risk of developing Urolithiasis. Urolithiasis is quite a common condition with the intense pain. The treatment available for urolithiasis include drugs as well as surgeries but the side effects and the recurrence rate are too high. Thus, physicians and patients remain to be dependent on alternative systems of medicine. In indigenous system of medicine Vitis vinifera L. is reported to be useful against kidney stones. The fresh fruit juice of Vitis vinifera (FJVV) was evaluated for its antiurolithiatic activity against urolithiasis induced rats. Urolithiasis was induced by administration of sodium oxalate (70mg/kg) intraperitonially to adult male Wister rats (150-200g) for 7 days served as a preventive model and Ethylene glycol (0.75%v/v) in drinking water for 28 days served as a curative model. Two doses FJVV 4ml/kg and 8ml/kg was subjected for the evaluation of anti-urolithiatic activity. Cystone (750mg/kg) served as standard in both the models. The present study concludes that fresh fruit juice of Vitis vinifera possess anti-urolithiatic activity.

Keywords: Anti-urolithiatic, Cystone, Ethylene glycol, Sodium oxalate, Vitis vinifera.
