ABSTRACT

A wide range of plants and their derived products are used in the folk medicine for the treatment of urolithiasis as a prophylactic agent or as a curative agent. Most of the herbs are very effective but still many of their mechanisms are unclear. In present study we are focusing on evaluation of antiurolithiatic activity of Boerhaavia diffusa. Boerhaavia Diffusa is a well known medicinal plant in traditional medicine in india and in other regions of world. Boerhaavia Diffusa is widespread occurring throughout India and other countries especially, Pacific and Southern United States. It is most important medicinal plant in treating many human ailments mentioned in ayurveda, charaka samhitha and sushritha samhitha. It is a creeping perennial much - branched herb with fusi form roots. Nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis is a recurrent disease and annual incidence of kidney stone disease is rising worldwide. Nephrolithiais is the formation of kidney stones within the urinary tract. Urine is normally supersaturated with most stone forming components and contains chemicals that reduce development of stone formation. Boerhaavia has shown several therapeutic applications in various ayurvedic formulations and it is one of the most promising ingredients. It is a good source of nutritional supplements as reported to contain amino acids in whole plant along with calcium and other minerals. In the present study the plant ethanolic extract was prepared and was shown to possess antiurolithiatic activity as well antimicrobial activity. It was evidenced that the plant extract had shown to inhibit the nucleation and followed by aggregation.
