ABSTRACT
Introduction: Most developing countries are adopting antibiotic policy to contain the acute problem of drug resistance. This study was undertaken to prospectively determine the compliance with the antibiotic policy in various treating departments of hospital and possible reasons for non-compliance. Methodology: The study was a prospective review of patient records in the hospital. Clinical notes and medication charts of the latest hospital admissions were checked for antibiotic prescribing. Culture/sensitivity reports were secured from hospital computer & patients were monitored until discharge. Observations were noted and well documented. Results: The compiled
result showed that the most diagnosed disorders in the hospital were Sepsis and Respiratory tract infections. The common bacterial infection-causing organisms is Klebsiella. More than half of all collected cases adhered to the Hospital’s Antibiotic Policy. 53.3% of all cases collected had a change in the clinical therapy 48 hours after the culture and sensitivity tests were conducted. Conclusion: Adherence to hospital antibiotic policy is low. Physicians’ antibiotic prescribing practices should be optimized. Adherence to and updating of the antibiotic policy is recommended.
