COMPARISON OF QUALITY OF LIFE BETWEEN GESTATIONAL DIABETICS AND NON-DIABETIC PRENATALS AND PREDICTING THE IMPACT OF COUNSELING IN GESTATIONAL DIABETICS

ABSTRACT
Aim: To assess and compare the quality of life in GDM and Non-GDM patients and predicting the impact of counseling in GDM patients. Methods: It is a prospective observational study conducted at Department of obstetrics and gyanaecology in 4 hospitals in and around Erode, Tamilnadu; for a period of 6 months from January to June 2019, in 4 hospitals in and around Erode, Tamilnadu; for a period of 6 months. Patients diagnosed with Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and Non-Gestational diabetes mellitus(Non-GDM) were taken in our study. Quality of life questionnaire (WHO-BREF} were collected initially from GDM and Non-GDM prenatals and counseling was provided to GDM patients through direct interview. After a follow up of 2 weeks the questionnaire was again filled by the patients. The
data obtained were compared using wilcoxon sign rank test and Mann Whitney test for predicting the QOL of GDM and Non-GDM prenatals and impact of counseling in GDM patients. Results and Discussion: A total of 50 patients with GDM and Non-GDM prenatals quality of life were analyzed using WHO-BREF questionnaire it consists of 4 domains physical (domain-1), psychological(domain-2). Social (domain-3), environmental (domain-4). The scores of each domain was compared and analyzed using wilcokson sign rank test and Mann Whitney test found scores of post counseled patients were increased which is statistically significant with p-value(0.001). Conclusion: The study concluded that significant enhancement in the quality of life of patients following pharmacist mediated counseling since there were an improvement in QOL score in post counseled patients. The applied health education was an effective tool that implicate significant changes in the QOL of patients. Life style changes such as nutritional therapy, appropriate education and self management strategies are pivotal to improve outcomes. The study proves that the educational approach is a necessary step for the better management and to improve quality of life.
