A REVIEW ON: PERIODONTAL FILM FOR THE TREATMENT OF PERIODONTITIS

ABSTRACT
Periodontitis is a disease involving supportive structures of the teeth prevails in all groups, ethnicities, races and both genders. Periodontal disease is a localized inflammatory response due to microbial infection of a periodontal pocket arising from the accumulation of plaque. One disadvantage of using systemic antibiotics is that the level needed to treat periodontal disease is high, because the concentration that reaches the periodontal tissues after systemic ingestion is low; additionally, overuse of systemic antibiotics to treat disease has contributed to an increasing in the level of antibiotic resistance worldwide. These
disadvantages are absent with the use of locally drug delivery system. Local drug delivery devices can provide an effective concentration of the antimicrobial agent at the site of action with avoidance of undesirable side effects. Periodontal films which could be placed into the periodontal pocket, and be capable of delivering therapeutic concentrations of drug for prolonged period of time at a much lower dose, hence avoiding side effects. This review approaches local drug delivery of antimicrobial agent to the periodontal pocket, their usefulness, as well as the advancement of this periodontal film effectiveness in the periodontal therapy.
