A REVIEW ON THE RECENT ADVANCES IN PHYTOSOME TECHNOLOGY

ABSTRACT

Phytosomes are novel and unique drug delivery systems that are formed as complex between phospholipids and drugs. These are useful to improve the bio-availability and physico-chemical properties of drugs with poor bio-availability profiles. Bio-availability is increased due to lipophilic nature of the complex especially for oral and topical administration of drugs. These are safe due to the structural similarities between the phospholipids and biological membrane components, effective and stable as there exists unique molecular bonding between drug and phospholipids. These possess several advantages as high entrapment efficacy, dual solubility, nano sized particles, high bio-availability, controlled release etc., Useful to incorporate both hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs to improve their bio-availability. These protects the drugs from adverse gastric environment and metabolic degradation. Therefore, Phytosomes offers greater scope for the development of effective dosage forms of several natural drugs with poor bio-availability.
