ABSTRACT
Introduction: Prehypertension is a precursor for increase of hypertension and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Yoga therapy plays important role in reduction of the blood pressures in prehypertension and hypertension. Blood pressure is controlled by the reduction in vagal tone as a result of relaxation caused due to controlled and slow breathing which is practiced in pranayama. Reduced vagal tone also causes a reduction in heart rate as a result of change in the sympathetic stimulation and a change in the vascular system due to parasympathetic stimulation. Hence a need for studies with a proper structured yoga dosage is required in this area of Blood pressure management. Aim: Assess the Effect of Structured Yoga
Practice on Reduction of Blood Pressure at Tertiary Care Hospital. Methodology: The Prospective, randomized, non-blinded study was conducted at KG Hospital, Coimbatore for the period of 6 months with 120 study populations with study criteria. Result: Majority of the Intervention group patients 63% were on Antihypertensive drug treatment and 65% of control group were on treatment. 43% of Control group were under controlled Blood pressure and 37% of Interventional group were under Blood Pressure control. After follow up, the mean of SBP was found that, 128.4 mmHg and 130.1 mmHg in Intervention and Control group. Conclusion: The study concludes that, a need for proper structured yoga dosage will reduce the blood pressure and improve the quality of life in hypertensive patients.
