ABSTRACT
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a common preventable and treatable disease, is characterized by airflow limitation that is usually progressive and associated with an enhanced chronic inflammatory response in the airways and the lung to noxious particles or gases. Renal functions test in COPD patients is an important marker and its deterioration is poor prognosis .Early identification is important to prevent the complications like malnutrition and renal failure. This study aims at investigating the assessment of renal function test; blood urea, serum creatinine and serum electrolytes in patients with COPD. Study the effect of COPD and O2 saturation on these parameters. Patients and Methods: This cross sectional study include 50 patients with COPD, their age ranging between (30-82years). The study was performed from October 2014 to
December2014. All the patients were previously diagnosed as COPD and they were examined in the outpatient unit, general medical ward, and emergency unit in Kirkuk General Hospital. Inclusion criteria, Conscious patient with COPD clinically depending on the Global Initiative for chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) – a project initiated by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the World Health Organization(WHO)and radio logically depending on chest x-ray.and CTscan of the chest. Result: Fifty patients were included in this study, 25 male and 25 female. The most common age group for patients included in this study was 56 – 70 years, 27 patients (54%),.The study reveals that there is no direct relation between COPD and renal function test. Renal function test was within normal range in COPD patients. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study indicates that there was no significant difference in renal function test between male and female patients with COPD. In patients with COPD blood urea and serum creatinine are higher in those above 70years age.
