ABSTRACT A novel coronavirus known as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is the causative agent for the disease coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19). Despite rigorous global containment and quarantine efforts, the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019) pandemic has infected more than 49,17,417 individuals and caused deaths of over 3,20,609 individuals around the world. There is currently no medication available to treat COVID-19 patients. However, intensive research and clinical trials are underway to find an effective drug against the causative agent, SARS-CoV-2, and also against other pathogenic coronaviruses (CoV). The current review, summarizes SARS-CoV-2 viral infection, pathogenesis and antiviral therapies being tested presently as well as those which have not been explored clinically.
