SEED PRIMING: AN EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUE FOR SEED GERMINATION
Pragati Pandey and Tulika Mishra*
ABSTRACT
With the increase in human population, increasing deforestation, decrease in natural resources, and the ever-growing demand for food and medicine, certain plants need to be conserved because of their over-exploitation. For sustainable use of plants biotechnological interventions are required; in vitro propagation, agro-techniques, cryopreservation and seed priming. This paper summarizes the various techniques of priming of seeds and its physiological implications in germination and growth of the plant. Priming enhances the plant defense mechanism. Farming can be revolutionized by setting up the exact duration for treatment, solution, and temperature. DNA repair mechanism and antioxidant response are involved in the growth of the
seedling due to different stress present in the environment. Future challenges for crop productivity, conservation and seed germination barriers can be overcome with the knowledge of different priming treatment.
