PHARMACOLOGICAL AND THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF KANKOLA (PIPER CUBEBA LINN) – A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
Spices are important part of Indian cuisine. Many spices apart from just enhancing the taste of the food also contribute in preventing diseases. Spices play a vital role in treating many diseases by the virtue of their potential medicinal properties. Kankola is one such spice which is said to have properties like Hridya, Ruchya, Deepana, Panchana etc and is included in many ayurvedic formulations. Having phytoconstituents like cubebin, hinokinin, clusin, essential oil, piperidine etc, this drug is known to possess antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antidysentery, anti-asthematic, carminative, antioxidant properties. This review aims at collecting comprehensive data of Kankola from various ayurvedic classical texts and also focus
on its phyto-constituents as well as pharmacological attributes adding scope for new researches.
