ABSTRACT
The vast majority of currently used dosage formulations have poor pharmacokinetic and biopharmaceutical properties. In order to prevent any negative effects on other tissues or organs, it is imperative to develop a reliable drug delivery system that only delivers the active drug molecule to the site of action. Targeted drug delivery refers to giving drugs to patients at the intended or location of action. This improves the efficacy of the therapy by reducing the side effects of the medicine utilised. The inherent advantage of this approach enables the administration of the required drug at a lower dose and with fewer side effects. For a future point of view, the benefits, drawbacks, ideal qualities, and development of targeted drug delivery systems are also
discussed. This cutting-edge delivery technique can include a variety of drug carriers, including as nanoparticles, nano micelles, nanorobots, quantum dots, and folate targeting. Other drug carriers include lipoproteins, liposomes, and microspheres. The targeted drug delivery system is covered in this review, along with its requirements, needs, and most recent discoveries in related studies. Nanoparticles may function well as carriers of active drugs when paired with specific ligands and may resemble a "magic bullet" in many aspects. The use of nanorobots seems promise for the safe and dependable delivery of various drugs for passive and active targeting. Targeted drug delivery or smart drug delivery has a bright future and is expected to become the new standard in the pharmaceutical industry. A summary of important future strategies for merging medication delivery technologies to treat illnesses concludes the review. Future views, difficulties, and recent advancements are also emphasised.
