ABSTRACT
The oral route is considered to be the most preferred route for systemic drug administration; however, the oral route is not suitable for the administration of drugs for lower gastrointestinal (GI) diseases; this is due to their release at the upper GI tract (stomach, small intestine), which further reduces drug accessibility at the lower GI tract. Colon-specific drug delivery systems have been extensively studied over the last two decades to overcome this challenge. Colonic drug delivery has grown in importance not only for the treatment of local diseases associated with the colon, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative
colitis, but also for systemic delivery of proteins, therapeutic peptides, anti-asthmatic drugs, antihypertensive drugs, and anti-diabetic agents. This review article briefly discusses the colon's introduction, factors influencing the colonic transition, colonic diseases, and novel and emerging technologies for colon targeting.
Keywords: colon targeted drug delivery, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, chron’s disease, novel approaches.
