ABSTRACT
There are several routes of drug administration such as oral, transdermal,
parenteral, rectal, ocular, intra-vaginal, nasal etc. Amongst
them nasal drug delivery shows great impact. Recently, it has been
shown that many drugs have better bioavailability by nasal route than
by oral route because it has been attributed to rich vasculature and a
highly permeable structure of the nasal mucosa. Intranasal route of
administration shows potential for delivery of drugs to brain. The noseto-
brain drug delivery of drugs is advantageous as it requires low dose
of drug, avoids first pass effect. Also it is fast in action and suitable for
the drugs that degrade in gastrointestinal tract. However, the major
limitation with nasal route administration is the poor contact of the formulations with the
nasal mucosa due to mucoceliary clearance. Many attempts have been done in the recent past
to increase the residence time of drug formulations in the nasal cavity, resulting in improved
nasal drug absorption by using mucoadhesive polymers.
