ABSTRACT
Ayurvedic text reports suggested Lannea coromandelica (Houtt.) Merr is used in various disorders like Vrana (Ulcers), Apabahuka (Frozen shoulder), Dantasula (Teeth pain) and Amavata (Rheumatoid arthritis). In the present study, an attempt was made to investigate Pharmacognostical and phytochemical studies on the bark of the Lannea coromandelica (Houtt.) Merr (Anacardiaceae) .The study includes Macroscopy, microscopy and preliminary phytochemical analysis have been carried out on the bark. The transverse section of stem consist of abundant stone cells which are in groups and in alternate patches of 7 to 10 in cortex region, Phelloderm, prism shaped
crystals, phloem fibers, abundant reddish tannin content in the Parenchymatous region, collapsed phloem, non-collapsed phloem, medullary rays and sieve tubes. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of extracts was carried out. The Stem bark reveals Pharmacognostical features like stone cells, phloem fibers and calcium oxalate crystals, reddish tannin content, Parenchymatous region, medullary rays, starch grains and sieve tubes etc. In phytochemical study results were positive for alkaloids, carbohydrates, sugars, proteins, tannins, steroids etc. This could be used as indices for identification and standardization of the plant.
