Abstract

PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF IPOMOEA AQUATICA FORSSK

*Risav Gauro, Prof. Mohan P. Amatya

ABSTRACT

Present study, concentrated on total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity and cytotoxic activity of Ipomoea aquatica Forssk. – an aquatic, semi aquatic or tropical plant grown as a vegetable, and has wide application in traditional medicine. The plant was found to contain alkaloids, glycosides, carbohydrates, phenols, tannins, terpenoids, steroids, coumarins, flavonoids and quinones. Ethyl acetate extract showed highest phenolic content (280.94±0.001 mgGAE/g) and flavonoid content (53.10±0.016 mgQE/g). Result showed that the ethyl acetate extract possess significantly higher antioxidant activity (IC50 value; 57.56±2.658 μg/mL) than other four extracts of the plant. The chloroform and ethyl acetate extract only showed antibacterial activity. All the extracts of the plant were found to be cytotoxic but mostly high toxicity was observed in chloroform extract (LC50; 4.849±5.549 μg/mL) followed by ethyl acetate extract (LC50; 15.84±6.015 μg/mL).Thus, the plant might be used as a source of natural antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic compounds.
