Abstract

MIC AND MBC VALUES OF SIX HERBAL EXTRACTS AGAINST PATHOGENS OF OTITIS EXTERNA

Pooja Prakash Mankar* and Archana Sudhir Pethe

ABSTRACT

The present study deals with the antimicrobial activity of herbal extracts and determination of MIC and MBC against pathogenic bacteria of otitis externa. Six herbal extracts (Piper betel, Aloe vera, Tinospora cordifolia, Datura metel, Argemone mexicana and Murraya koenigii) were prepared using soxhlet apparatus in an ethanol and tested against the ten Pathogenic bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae strain PPM1A MT026979, Staphylococcus simmie MT027010, Bacillus sp. Clone PPM2C MT027034, Acinetobacter sp. Clone PPM2D MT02701, Bacillus sp. Clone PPM3C MT027034, Pseudomonas otitidis OK035334, Metabacillus malikii strain PPM OK035442, Acinetobacter sp. Clone PPM8A MT027056, Exiguobacterium sp. Clone PPM9A MT027057 and Enterococcus sp. Clone PPM9BMT027061). The antibiotic Imipenem and Ceftazidime used as positive control and DMSO used as negative control. The results showed that all the herbal extracts exhibited prominent antimicrobial activity against all pathogens with zone of inhibition ranging from 10 to 28mm except Argemone mexicana. Piper betel and Aloe vera required very less MIC and MBC values ranging from 2mg/ml to 16mg/ml and 4mg/ml to 32mg/ml respectively to inhibit the growth of bacterium. As the crude extracts showed very less MIC values; further purification leads to minimize the MIC and can be used to formulate new potent drugs.

Keywords: MIC, MBC, Herbal extracts, Otitis externa.
