Abstract

MANAGEMENT OF ASRUGDARA-A CASE REPORT

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Asrugdara is a condition in which excessive, prolonged or intermenstrual bleeding per vagina are the main symptoms. It occurs due to the vitiation of Vata pradhana tridosha. Asrugdara refers to all types of abnormal uterine bleeding. Vyadhipratyanika chikitsa can be adopted for treating Asrugdara which includes Vatanulomana, Rakthasthambhana, Balya, Deepana-pachana and Raktashodhana. Naarikelapushpaadi kashaya (Thenginpookkuladi kashaya) is one among the Asrudaraharayoga which is mentioned in Sahasrayoga in the context of kashayaprakarana. It is a polyherbal formulation which is having Tikta kashayarasa, Sheetavirya, Ratasthambhaka and Balya properties. Methodology: A subject aged 34 years belonged to lower middle socio-economic status came to OPD of Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara college of Ayurveda and hospital, Hassan, Karnataka with chief complaints of excessive and prolonged bleeding associated with generalized weakness during menstruation for 1 year which were severe enough to disturb her lifestyle. By symptoms and clinical examinations, the disease was diagnosed as Asrugdara and ultrasonography report revealed no sonological abnormalities, thus considered as Dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Past history revealed the recurrent similar complaints for which she took hormonal treatment and underwent blood transfusion. Presently the subject is treated with Naarikela pushpaadi kashaya 15 ml twice a day before food with equal quantity of Sukhoshna jala for two consecutive cycles. Result: In this case study, it is observed that Naarikela pushpaadi kashaya has provided significant relief in all the symptoms of Asrugdara. Conclusion: Naarikelapushpaadi Kashaya is having Vata pitta hara, Rakthapitta hara, Rakta sthambhaka, Balya, Agnivardhaka and Ojovardhaka properties in general. It is an effective Anti-inflammatory, Hepatoprotective formulation which will help in the management of Asrugdara effectively.
