Muna Gauli* and Sujana Shakya

ABSTRACT

Background: Acute tonsillitis may be defined as inflammation of the tonsils, predominantly due to infection. Acute infections of the palatine tonsils predominantly occur in school-aged children, but people of any age may be affected. Research on Norwegian twins indicates a prevalence of approximately 11,700 per 100,000 individuals, while a study on primary school children in Turkey indicated tonsillitis prevalence of approximately 12,100 per 100,000 individuals. Objective: To study prescription pattern of acute tonsillitis in a hospital in Nepal. Methodology: A descriptive, observational and hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted to access demographic factors (age and gender), sign and symptoms of acute tonsillitis, prescribing pattern of acute tonsillitis and its cost analysis in Nepal APF hospital over a period of 3 months. A total of 50 cases were studied. Acute tonsillitis patients receiving medications were included in the study. Statistical analysis was performed with excel 2021. Results and Discussion: The study was conducted in Nepal APF hospital. Among 50 patients, majority of the patients were female and age group 31-40years. In this study, the common sign and symptoms were sore throat, difficult swallowing and red swollen tonsils followed by fever, earache, cough, nose blockade and hoarseness of voice. The most prescribed drug was antimicrobial drugs (amoxycillin + clavulanic acid, cefpodoxime) followed by antihistaminic drugs (levocetrizine, cetirizine, loratadine), analgesics and antipyretics agents (nimesulide, paracetamol and ibuprofen, etoricoxib), proton pump inhibitors (pantoprazole) and mouthwash (diclofenac, iodine -povidine).The average cost per prescription was Nrs. 1011.84.The minimum cost per prescription was Nrs. 323 and maximum cost per prescription was Nrs.1539. Conclusion: This study had been focused on the prescription pattern and its cost analysis.
