ABSTRACT
Fluconazole is a synthetic triazole antifungal drug for the treatment of superficial and systemic fungal infections. Oral administration of the drug has various side effects. Also Fluconazole on topical application shows irritation. In this study Fluconazole formulation was prepared for Onychomycosis. Fluconazole was first incorporated in microsponge to avoid irritation which was further incorporated in transungual patch for longer residence time on nails. The microsponges were studied for entrapment efficiency and particle size. The particle size of microsponge ranged from 25 to 120 μm in diameter. The transungual film of microsponges was studied for thickness, % elongation, folding endurance, moisture content, moisture uptake, tensile strength and ex vitro drug release on goat skin using Franz diffusion cell and was found within limits. In conclusion, transungual patch could successfully be used as a promising delivery system for Onychomycosis.
