BHAGANDARA VIS-À-VIS ANAL FISTULA: AN OVERVIEW

ABSTRACT
The word Bhagandara is composed of two words viz. Bhaga and darana. This means Bhagandara is tearing of Guda Pradesh. Acharya Sushruta has included this disease in Ashtamahagada, which is difficult to cure.[1] It is most common anorectal disorder found in human beings. In Ayurvedic text, its etiopathogenesis, symptoms, types, preventive measures and curative aspects have been mentioned in detail. According to Acharya Sushruta, firstly it develops as a deep-rooted boil or pidika within two angula circumference of Guda Pradesh and if not managed properly it burst and develops into Bhagandara.[2] In modern, it can be correlated with Fistula-in ano. Fistula-in ano is an abnormal connection between perianal skin and ano-rectum. It is characterized by purulent discharge or cyclic pain
associated with the abscess re-accumulation followed by intermittent spontaneous decompression. This article is a review about Bhagandara, its causes, classification, sign & symptoms and management according to Ayurveda and modern medicine.
