A PROSPECTIVE STUDY ON DRUG UTILIZATION EVALUATION IN END STAGE RENAL DISEASE PATIENTS AT DIALYSIS DEPARTMENT

ABSTRACT
Aim and Objectives: The principle aim of this study is to describe the Drug Utilization Pattern in ESRD patients. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 120 patients diagnosed with ESRD. Statistical analysis was performed to assess whether the drugs are used appropriately, safely and effectively. Results: A total of 120 cases were analysed by using WHO indicators, among the 1533 prescribed drugs the mean number of drugs per prescription was found to be 12.78. Percentage of patients prescribed with an injection was 29%, antibiotics was 2%, generic name was 17% and percentage of
drugs prescribed from the Kerala essential medicine list was 70%. A positive correlation is found between ferritin & PTH and between ALP & PTH. Mean value of PTH levels in patients with vitamin D prescription is significantly lower than those without vitamin D prescription. Conclusion: The study illustrated the present-day scenario of ESRD patients in India & the prescribing trends of physician in managing these patients with co-morbidities & complications.
