Abstract

DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF PLURONIC LECITHIN ORGANOGEL FOR MANAGEMENT OF TOPICAL BACTERIAL INFECTION

Vipan Kumar*, Twinkle Garg and R. B. Sharma

ABSTRACT

Pluronic Lecithin Organogels (PLO) has gained attention since last decade for its considerable potential in treatment of skin diseases. PLO’s are biocompatible and thermodynamically stable formulations with enhanced skin permeation and localized effect. PLO has a versatile nature with low cost, dose flexibility and longer contact time. In this study, Ciprofloxacin organogels were created for the treatment of cutaneous infections. Organogels are semi-solid systems in which a three-dimensional network of self-assembled, interlaced gelator fibers immobilizes an organic liquid phase. The drug content, organoleptic characteristics, spreadability, viscosity, and drug release kinetics of the nanoparticles were all evaluated, as well as antibacterial effectiveness. The ciprofloxacin-loaded reverse micellar gelled system was successfully topicalized with acceptable viscosity, pH, and spreadability. Against four bacterial strains, the organogel method showed improved drug release and antibacterial activity.

Keywords: Pluronic, Lecithin, Topical Drug Delivery, Ciprofloxacin, PLO, Organogel, Skin permeability, anti-microbial activity and drug release.
