ABSTRACT
Background: SMEDDS traditionally originated as oral lipid based systems with the purpose of delivering lipophilic drugs. However, new approaches are presented by utilising this simplified system of drug delivery. Although routes such as topical, rectal, nasal and vaginal have gained lesser attention but the delivery of drug containing SMEDDS topically is noteworthy. Topical SMEDDS has the potential of delivering lipophilic drug with high efficacy topically in a cost effective manner. Aim: To formulate and optimize SMEDDS loaded
with herbal extract for treatment of rheumatism. Material and Method: Castor oil and Tween 20 have been utilized for preparation of SMEDDS. SMEDDS are prepared by ultrasonication method and further characterized on several evaluation parameters such as drug content, drug encapsulation, PDI, Morphology, globule size and thermodynamic stability studies. Result: SMEDDS are developed and the formulations passed all the evaluation parameters.
Keywords: SMEDDS, Chenopodium album, Piper betle, Tween 20, Rheumatism, Ternary Phase diagram.
