ABSTRACT

Tamra Bhasma is used in various diseases and is an important ingredient of various Rasaushadhies. The aim of present study was to evaluate the acute oral toxicity of Tamra Bhasma (TB) in rats in relation to quantity of Putas given to it. In this study, three samples of Tamara Bhasma i.e. Tamra Bhasma (TB1) qualifying all end point parameters as described in Ayurvedic tests, Tamra Bhasma (TB2) prepared by giving 5 additional Putas and Tamra Bhasma (TB3) prepared by giving 10 additional Putas, were administered to rats in different groups. These three coded samples were subjected to their acute oral toxicity study and administered orally for 14 days as per OECD 423 guidelines. The three samples of TB at starting dosage of 300 mg/kg followed by 2000 mg/kg were administered and animals were observed for toxic signs at 24 hours and for the next 14 days. Animals were observed for mortality, body weight and behavioral changes. The test materials did not cause mortality in the treated rats. The test materials did not induce any gross pathological alterations in any of the rats at the respective doses, as evident during their necropsy. It was found that there were no significant differences in body weight changes. The present work advocates that an acute oral administration of three samples of Tamra Bhasma was found to be non-toxic and safe in tested experimental conditions.
