TO EVALUATE DRUG UTILIZATION PATTERN AMONG ENT PATIENTS IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL OF NORTH KASHMIR, UNION TERRITORY OF JAMMU AND KASHMIR, INDIA

ABSTRACT
Background: Drug utilization research is an all important part of pharmacoepideminology as it explains the extent, nature and determinants of drug exposure. The ultimate goal is to achieve rational and cost effective medical care, particularly in the economically developing countries. Considering these facts, this study was planned to evaluate drug utilization pattern among ENT patients of a tertiary care hospital, Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir. Aim: To evaluate drug utilization pattern among ENT patients in a Tertiary Care Hospital of North Kashmir, Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Methodology: This was a Prospective, observational study carried out
at ENT ward, GMC, Baramulla. The study was carried out for a period of 4 months. During this period, data was collected in predesigned case report form. Descriptive statistics were used for the analysis of data. The data obtained was represented as mean ± SEM and percentages, as applicable. Drug data and patient characteristic data were computed using MS Excel version 2007and SPSS version 16.0 statistical package. Results and discussion: Demographic profile includes patient’s related parameters such as age, gender, literacy status, living status, social habits, economic status etc. While studying about the gender wise distribution of patient, it was found that total number of male patients were 321 accounting for 61.7% of study population, whereas female patient were 199 accounting for 38.2% of total study population. Out of 520 patients, 83 (15.96%) patients were from age group of 0-20 years, 117 (22.50%) patients were from age group of 21-40 years, 175 (33.65%) patients were from age group of 41-60 years, 95 (18.26%) patients were from age group of 61-80 years, 50 (9.61%) patients were from age group >80 years. Conclusion: Antibiotics, steroids, anti-allergic drugs, and many other types of drugs are often prescribed to people with ENT disorders. The demographic profile of these people shows how they are split up by gender, age, and socioeconomic class. It was seen that the number of male patients was higher than the number of female patients. In all age groups, the study showed that there were more male patients than female patients. The study showed that the number of low-income ENT patients is higher than the number of upper-income ENT patients.
