Abstract

A STUDY ON COMMON LIP PRINT PATTERN AMONG KANPUR POPULATION

ABSTRACT

Background: Chelioscopy is study of different types of an individual Lip prints, Lip prints are also unique like that of finger prints i.e, most of the time lip prints of an Individual is usually not same as another individual. Lip prints are used in identification of the suspects. Aim: The aim of the present study was to determine the predominant lip print pattern among Kanpur population, India, and also to determine its uniqueness. Materials and Methods: The study comprised of 300 subjects (124 males and 176 females), aged from 18 to 30 years, from Kanpur population, India. A dark-colored lipstick was applied with a single stroke and the subjects were asked to rub both the lips to spread the applied lipstick, after which a lip print was made on butter paper. The lip print was visualized with magnifying lens. Results: Type I and type IV were the most predominant lip patterns while type V was the least common pattern observed. There was no statistically observed difference between males and females in individual lip print type. Conclusion: Just like finger prints and teeth, lips also have a specific pattern of grooves and fissures. Lip prints are unique for every person and show differences according to the race and the ethnic origins of a person.
