Abstract

FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF EMULGEL OF TINIDAZOLE

Mamta Yadav*, D. C. Bhatt, Deepika Yadav, Priyanka Y.

ABSTRACT

Emulgels are emulsions, either of the oil-in-water or water-in-oil type, which are gelled by mixing with a gelling agent to increase its (emulsion) stability and for dual release control system. Tinidazole is an antiprotozoal, antibacterial agent. The nitro group of tinidazole is reduced by cell extracts of Trichomonas. The free nitro radical generated as a result of this reduction may be responsible for the antiprotozoal activity. The prepared emulgels were evaluated for their physical appearance, pH determination, viscosity, spreadability, extrudability, in-vitro drug release, drug content and stability. All the prepared emulgels showed acceptable physical properties, homogeneity, consistency, spreadability, viscosity and pH value. The in-vitro release rate of emulgel was evaluated using diffusion cell containing dialysis membrane with phosphate buffer pH 7.4 as the receptor medium. The emulgels were found to be stable with respect to physical appearance, pH, rheological properties and drug content at all temperature and conditions. Zero order model was found to be the most suitable best fit drug release kinetics model. Therefore, it could be concluded that the present investigation was able to achieve the desired aim of formulating controlled release emulgels of tinidazole for topical drug delivery.
