ABSTRACT
Vegas are natural urges in response to the biological (including psychic) functions of the organism, adjusting the balance of the system. Some of them are purely physiological and some are protective biological reflexes. According to the ancient Ayurvedic texts, there is one main cause of all types of diseases and that is the suppression of natural Vega. Therefore, it should not be suppressed. But still, some people use it to suppress Vegas. Ayurveda has described 13 natural Vegas which should not be retained at any cost. If they are suppressed on a regular basis due to any reason, they can lead to various health
problems. Out of these 13 Vegas, Suppression of Nidra (sleep) also should not be retained as others. Controlling urge Nidra may lead to impairments in both Sharirika and Manasika Doshas. If lack of sleep is occurred due to shift work sleep disorder (S.W.S.D.) it will cause symptoms of insomnia in association with gastro-intestinal disorders, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, immunity disorders, cancer, and reproductive issues. Ayurveda acharyas have long ago identified the negative consequences of night awakening in the context of Adharniya Vegas which causes drowsiness, headache, heaviness in the eyes, etc. so in this article, an attempt is made to explain various consequences of Nidra Vega Dharana mentioned in Ayurvedic texts.
