ABSTRACT
The colon-targeted drug delivery system in the colon is a site where both systemic and local delivery of drugs can take place. The colon is very desirable for local treatment of a spread of bowel diseases like colonic cancer, Crohn’s disease, amebiasis, inflammatory bowel disease, local treatment of colon pathogens, local colonic disorder, and systemic delivery of protein and peptides. This review mainly focused on approaches for colon-targeted drug delivery systems namely the Prodrug approach for drug delivery to the colon, Osmotically controlled drug delivery (OROS-CT), Time-dependent system, pH-dependent approach, Pressure controlled system, Microflora activated
system, Redox-sensitive polymers, Bio-adhesive system, Microparticulate system and different kinds of polymers are pectin, guar gum, inulin, chitosan, locust bean gum, alginates which may be utilized in colon targeted drug delivery system in the formulation of and marketed products.
