ABSTRACT
Background: Newbouldia leavis have been used in folkloric medicine for the treatment of various disease conditions with proven efficaciousness. It has potentials as a natural anti-inflammatory agent which may reduce the burden of diseases associated with inflammation. Aim: The aim of this research work was to carry out anti-inflammatory activity of methanol extract of Newbouldia laevis root. Methods: The pulverized root was soaked in methanol using cold maceration to obtain the extract. The acute toxicity study was carried out as described by Lorke’s. Egg-albumin and xylene induced oedema models were used for anti-inflammatory evaluation of the extract. Results: The phytoconstituents of therapeutic important extract gave
4.4% yield. Acute toxicity study showed no mortality at 5000mg/kg b.wt, indicating safe use of the Newbouldia leavis root. Both anti-inflammatory models recorded a significant reduction of the inflammation. It was observed that the extract possesses a dose dependent anti-inflammatory activity. The effect at 200mg/kg showed no significant difference when compared to standard drug whereas 400mg/kg produced a significant reduction of the oedema with p value < 0.05. Conclusion: The findings have authenticated the claim that root of Newbouldia laevis is used in treating inflammatory disorder. This research provides a pharmacological base for the utilization of Newbouldia laevis root for the treatment of inflammatory disorders and related diseases.
