ABSTRACT
Pootikarana is characterised by fetid pus discharge from the ear with or without pain.[1] The clinical features of Pootikarana as explained in Ayurvedic texts have the relevance with Pootikarana. CSOM (safe type-tubotympanic) is a long standing infection of a part or whole of the middle ear cleft characterised by ear discharge, permanent perforation of TM, hearing loss, oedematous middle ear mucosa.[2] Karnapoorana is the specific treatment modality mentioned for Pootikarana along with few other treatment procedures. As it is not a self-limiting disease, definite treatment is needed to reduce the complications. So the present study was carried out to standardize the finished product Gandhakadi Taila and Rasnadi Guggulu to confirm
its identity, purity and quality. Physiochemical analysis of Gandhakadi Taila shows loss on drying 0.47%, R.I. 1.488, Saponification value 183.4, Acid value 4.47. Thin layer chromatography showed 7 spots. Physiochemical analysis of Rasnadi Guggulu shows loss on drying 08.99%, total solid 91.01%, total ash 18.56%, acid insoluble ash 01.86%, water soluble extractive 32.55%, alcohol soluble extractive 16.47% and pH 4.42, Thin layer chromatography showed 9,12 spots. This showed the presence of certain definite constituents in the Gandhakadi Taila and Rasnadi Guggulu and is helpful for easy separation of these constituents.
