ABSTRACT

In recent years, gastric problem like GERD and Peptic ulcer are increasing and becoming a common for which indiscriminate use of PPIs and H2 receptor antagonists (H2RA) has also been observed, somewhere with Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine. Therefore, a concern has been raised related to use of these medicine. Objective of this study was to evaluate the prescribing pattern of PPIs and H2RA according to WHO prescribing indicators, commonly prescribed PPIs and H2RA, commonly used concurrent medication and frequency of usage along with the dosage form. An observational study was conducted in Two tertiary care hospitals and two community pharmacies over a period of 6 months from November 2021 to April 2022 amongst the patient admitted in hospital - IPD – of tertiary care hospital and patients those visiting two community pharmacies that were prescribed either PPIs and H2RA. Data for this study was collected by reviewing individual patient prescriptions was recorded in own designed form. In the IPD, PPI prescribed in 279 prescriptions and H2RA in 45 while in the community pharmacy of the received prescription, 602 prescriptions with PPI while No prescription with H2RA. PPI and H2RA were prescribed more in Male. The predominant age group was 40-49, 60-69. Average number of drugs prescribed per prescription was 6.75 (IPD) and 3.87 (OPD). The most commonly prescribed PPIs was pantoprazole 93% (IPD) and 92.35% (OPD) and in H2RA ranitidine 14.51% (IPD). Domperidone was common drug in combination with PPI. The medicines studied were most commonly prescribed through oral out in tablet and capsule form subsequent to parenteral. They were most commonly prescribed with antibiotics (420), NSAIDS (451), antihypertensive (577) and multivitamin (465). There is a need to increase documentation, reassessment for use of these drugs and remedies to prevent acid related disorders.
