NEPHROTOXICITY AND CARDIOTOXICITY BY LITHIUM – A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT
Lithium is the lightest of alkali metal used for the treatment of bipolar disorder. It is formulated in the form of salts like lithium carbonate, lithium citrate(syrup). Lithium do not have any of psychotropic effect over individuals but, it act as mood stabilizers. Its recommended therapeutic concentration is about 900-1500 mg/day of lithium carbonate for outpatients and 1200-2400mg/day for hospitalized patients. Lithium has narrow therapeutic index 0.5 –0.8 mEq /L is considered as optimum dose for maintenance therapy and 0.8 -1.2 mEq/l is required for acute mania .Toxicity occurs if dose exceeds 1.5
mEq /L(4).
