SILYMARIN AS A NOVEL PHYTOACTIVE FOR THE TREATMENT OF CANCER

ABSTRACT
Silymarin is a flavonoidal medicinal plant extracted from the seeds of fruits of (silybum marianium L.Gaetn.) and belong to the family of Asteracease. It was first reported by Therphrastus. Several studies has been performed in vitro models and on animals for the testing the efficacy of silymarin along its action on carcinogenesis. Silymarin can be use in several cancer such as skin, oral, breast, prostate, ovarian, hepatic lung bladder, Cervical, pancreatic etc. Many pharmacological studies has revealed that silymarin is nontoxic in nature even at high dose andwhich suggest its safety for various diseases. The peak plasma levels after an oral dose are achieved after 4-6 hours in experiments on human beings and animals with the elimination half-life is about 6 hours. About 20-40% of the administered dose of silymarin is excreted in bile as sulphates and glucuronide conjugates in human beings.
