ABSTRACT
Panchagavya is a traditionally practiced formulation told in Ayurvedic lexicons for the treatment of diseases like Apasmara, Kamala, Vishama jwara. The drug is having its own specialty like the unique composition where all the products from the cow are utilized. The concept of the gut microbiome is found to be useful for the treatment of chronic gastrointestinal diseases such as IBS and IBD and also in the management of systemic metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. There are certain formulations in our science that can modulate the bacterial composition and preserve the balance of microbiota in a healthy state. Panchagavya is a cocktail of ghrita (ghee), Ksheera (milk), dhadhi (curd), kunapa jala (extract of cow dunk), and gomutra (cow‘s urine). This combination is a good source
of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria like Bifidobacteria, etc. Panchagavya will act as a nutritional supplement, and source of prebiotics, and maintain the microbial balance, thereby having a protective effect on multiple organ systems. Many doubts are still existing in the scientific community about the safety issues of consuming such metabolic byproducts. These doubts are arising because of the gap existing between traditional knowledge and conventional research methodologies. Utilizing the advancements in Biomedicine, one can give more insight and produce an evidence base for the traditional system of medicine.
