ABSTRACT

Objectives: The study was designed to investigate the relationship between Osteoprotegerin, HbA1c and certain biochemical markers of bone with obese and non obese type2 diabetic patients compared with healthy control line. Methods: A total number of 90 persons were classified to (60) patients and (30) control. The patients with T2DM was classified into the following categories:30 non obese & obese, age rang (25-75 years), OPG and vitamin D were analyzed in serum by using ELISA technique. HbA1c, phosphorus, total calcium and alkaline phosphatase were measured by colorimetric method. Results: The results of this study revealed a significant increase of serum Osteoprotegerin (OPG) and HbA1c but a significant decrease in serum PO4 and Vitamin D in the patient groups when compared with healthy control group. Total Calcium and Alkaline phosphatase gives nosignificant result. The study also showed a significant increase in OPG concentration with increasing diabetic duration. And when comparing between obese and non obese patient groups, it was found a significant decrease in the concentrations of OPG, vitamin D and PO4 in obese patients when compared with non obese patient groups. A significant positive correlation was observed between OPG and ALP (p=0.000), also between OPG and HbA1c (p=0.009( in diabetic groups. OPG exhibited a significant negative correlation with vitamin D, but No significant correlation between OPG, Ca & PO4. Conclusion: The most important findings of this study suggest that the level of OPG and vitamin D which is considered as important markers of bone health, OPG was increase inT2DM, but decrease in obese patient when compared with non obeseT2DM patient, vitamin D was decreased in T2DM and specially in obese patient. And its significantly correlated of OPG with vitamin D, HbA1c, ALP and diabetic duration.
