ABSTRACT
The present investigation deals with the formulation of Taste masked
orally disintegrating tablets of zolmitriptan that disintegrate in the oral
cavity upon contact with saliva and there by improve therapeutic
efficacy. It is a bitter drug, used in the treatment of migraine, in order
to mask the taste of drug, and to get rapid action, with improved
bioavailability, Taste masked orally disintegrating tablets were
prepared. Amberlite IPR88 is a cation-exchange resin used to mask the
taste by continuous sonication (about 6 hrs) method. Tablets were
prepared by direct compression method using super disintegrants like
crospovidone (F1 to F3), croscarmellose sodium (F4 to F6) and sodium
starch glycolate (F7 to F9), designated as nine different types of
formulations at different concentrations of 2%, 3% and 4% respectively. Tablets were
evaluated for weight variation, thickness, disintegration time, drug content, in vitro
dissolution, wetting time. Tablets containing crospovidone 4% (F3) exhibit quick
disintegration time than others. The in vitro disintegration time of the optimized tablet was
within 30 seconds and shows 100% release within 15 min. It follows first order release
kinetics with diffusion mechanism.
