ABSTRACT
Transdermal drug delivery has made an important contribution to medical practice, a transdermal patch is a medicated adhesive patch that is placed on the derma to deliver a specific dose through the skin into systemic circulation. An advantage of a TDDS over other types of delivery system such as oral, topical, intravenous, intramuscular, etc. is that the patch provides a controlled release of the medication, usually through either a porous membrane covering a reservoir of medication or through body heat melting thin layers of medication embedded in the adhesive. The main aim of transdermal drug delivery system is to deliver drugs into systemic circulation through skin at predetermined rate with minimal inter and intrapatient variations. During the past few years, attentiveness in the growth of novel drug delivery systems for existing drug molecules has been renewed. The growth of a novel delivery system for existing drug molecules not only upgrade the drug‟s performance in terms of efficacy and safety but also upgrade patient compliance and overall therapeutic benefit to a significant extent. To overcome difficulties in conventional dosage forms, a novel drug delivery system was developed (Chien, 1992; Banker, 1990; Guy, 1996). The impetus for the growth of novel drug delivery systems, aside from therapeutic efficacy is cost. Re-designing the modules and means to convey medicine into the body is a less challenging and more lucrative task. To address these problems, a controlled release drug delivery system, a novel drug delivery approach evolves, which facilitates the drug release into systemic circulation at a pre-determined rate. Controlled drug release can be achieved by transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDS) Transdermal drug delivery system is topically administered medicaments and deliver medicines via the skin portal to systemic circulation at a pre-established rate over a prolonged period. Transdermal Drug Delivery System (TDDS) are defined as self-contained, discrete dosage forms. [1]
