POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME

ABSTRACT
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a multifactorial and polygenic condition and is a most common endocrine disorder predominantly affecting reproductive aged women. It is also called as Stein – Leventhal Syndrome. The predisposing risk factors include genetics, neuroendocrine, lifestyle/environment, obesity that contributes to the development of PCOS. There are diverse clinical manifestations including irregular menstruation, hyperandrogenism that leads to problems like endometrial cancer and type II diabetes, anovulation, infertility, hyperthyroidism and a high risk of metabolic disorders apart
from psychosocial dysfunction. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimation revealed over 116 million women (3.4%) are affected by PCOS worldwide whereas the incidence of PCOS in India is nearly 35%. Despite the various manifestations, it also remains as one of the under diagnosed condition until planned for pregnancy. Management of PCOS in individuals can be achieved by lifestyle modifications, medications and surgical methods. This review provides information on the problem of PCOS in India, its pathophysiology, complications, diagnosis and elaborates about current management options.
